Since 1965 and born out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, Total Action for Progress (TAP) has helped hundreds of thousands of individuals and families across the Roanoke Valley and Allegheny Highlands achieve sustainable, equitable economic and personal independence. TAP took root as a local answer to a national call—a call to confront poverty, amplify voices, and build pathways to self-sufficiency. Today, TAP offers over 20 programs that create opportunities and change lives through education, employment, affordable housing, and safe and healthy environments.
Throughout 2025, we are celebrating 60 years of TAP’s story, work, and impact. This milestone honors our history while renewing our commitment to the future. We invite you to help us mark this significant occasion by visiting this page throughout the year, following us on social media, and joining our “60 for 60 Challenge.” The Challenge is a region-wide initiative encouraging EVERYONE—individuals, businesses, and organizations—to get involved in TAP’s mission in meaningful ways, learn more about our history, and help shape the road ahead.
