POSITION SUMMARY

The Maintenance/Custodial Technician is responsible for performing routine custodial and floor care duties while providing guidance and support to fellow Custodial Technicians. In addition to cleaning responsibilities, the Team Leader helps monitor cleaning quality and ensures that assigned tasks are completed consistently and in accordance with TAP and Head Start environmental, health, and safety standards. This role serves as a working lead and does not hold formal supervisory authority.

 

REPORTING STRUCTURE

  • Reports to: Supervisor of Maintenance
  • Coordinates with: Custodians, Maintenance, and Center Supervisors/Lead Teachers or designee
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: None (Acts as lead; monitors and Custodial Technicians work but does not supervise)

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs All Duties of a Maintenance/Custodial Technician:

  • Clean and disinfect restrooms, fixtures, mirrors, water fountains, and common areas
  • Mop floors (dust/wet), vacuum carpets, and shampoo as needed
  • Strip, wax, seal, and buff floors on a scheduled basis
  • Move and clean behind furniture; maintain cleanliness under movable items
  • Empty and clean trash cans daily and replace liners
  • Replenish soap, paper, and cleaning supplies as needed
  • Maintain janitor closets and equipment in an organized and sanitary condition
  • Operate floor care equipment (buffers, extractors, vacuums, burnishers)
  • Secure buildings during and at the end of shifts
  • Remove trash, debris, snow, or ice as needed

 

Maintenance/Custodial Technician – Specific Responsibilities

  • Monitor completion of daily and scheduled cleaning tasks across assigned sites
  • Report cleaning deficiencies or concerns to the Supervisor of Maintenance
  • Serve as primary contact for reporting custodial supply needs
  • Assist in onboarding and training new Technicians
  • Provide feedback to Supervisor on team performance and improvement areas
  • Help coordinate cleaning schedules to ensure coverage and efficiency
  • Communicate respectfully with staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Promote a positive team culture through professionalism and leadership

Custodial & Floor Care Duties

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, classrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas
  • Vacuum carpets; strip, wax, and buff hard floors
  • Empty trash, replace liners, and transport waste to designated areas
  • Clean windows, dust surfaces, and remove cobwebs
  • Replenish paper products, soap, and supplies
  • Maintain janitorial closets and ensure equipment is cleaned and stored properly

Grounds & Facility Support

  • Remove snow, ice, and debris from walkways and entrances
  • Mow, trim, pull weeds, and assist with outdoor clean-up
  • Move furniture and set up rooms for program use

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow OSHA, Head Start, and TAP safety standards
  • Secure buildings at end of shift and maintain confidentiality
  • Store chemicals and tools safely, out of children’s reach
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Identify and report hazards, code violations, or needed repairs

Additional Duties

  • Participate in team meetings and required trainings
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Head Start Maintenance Supervisor

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge of custodial equipment, floor care methods, and cleaning products
  • Ability to work independently while supporting team goals
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with people from diverse cultures and abilities
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions in custodial work
  • Ability to observe and assess cleaning standards and offer guidance where needed
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and respond to occasional urgent cleaning needs

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum 3 years custodial experience, including floor care and cleaning equipment use
  • Previous experience in a lead or team support role preferred
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and workplace safety practices
  • At TAP, we use the Whole Family Approach. Employees may be required to attend Whole Family training and complete related data entry as part of supporting this model.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a valid Virginia Operator’s license with a good driving record and reliable transportation.
  • TAP participates in the Virginia DMV Driver Alert Program.  Employees who operate a TAP vehicle or their personal vehicle to conduct TAP business may be subject to driver record monitoring through the Virginia DMV Driver Alert Program.
  • Must pass drug screening.  Some positions require positive complete background screening including criminal, sex offender and child protective services.
  • Physical activity of this position – climbing; ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like; balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing or sitting for long periods of time, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, use of fingers for – picking, pinching and typing; grasping, feeling, talking, hearing repetitive motion of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Must be able to work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Physical requirements of this position – medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently.
  • Visual acuity requirements – must be able to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
  • Conditions subject to in this position – both environmental conditions; activities occur inside and outside.
  • Weekends as requested.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

If position requires tools, TAP will purchase the needed tools.  The employee using the tools will be responsible for the care/maintenance of the tools.  If any tool(s) are damaged or malfunctions, the employee will return the tool(s) to the TAP office for replacement.  If the tool(s) are lost, the employee using the tool(s) will be responsible for replacing any tool(s) lost at their own expense.
