CLASSIFICATION:                Contract/ Temporary/ Internship

 

DEFINITION AND PURPOSE:

This is a temporary and part-time (20 hours a week) contract position, Monday-Friday (hours will vary, but flexible availability between 9:30AM-6:00PM is required). Do not apply if your schedule will not allow you to work during these times. Assist with the coordination of TAP’s VITA program and Tax Clinic. The goal of the Tax Clinic is to help eligible working individuals and families to access the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC), as tools for upward mobility.  Position involves marketing the tax clinic services to eligible taxpayers who qualify for the EITC and CTC, preparing federal and state income tax returns using IRS online system, collecting data necessary for reporting purposes, completing virtual preparation process with “GetYourRefund” customers, and assisting the Program Coordinator in quality reviewing all tax returns prepared through the VITA program.  This position will begin late-January 2025 (TBD) and will end between April 16-April 30, 2025 (depending on need of tax services).

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:

Supervised by:              Financial Services Assistant Director/ Program Coordinator

Supervises:                   No one

Coordinates with:          TAP Financial Services Component; all TAP programs

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure the site adheres to IRS VITA quality site requirements and Volunteer Standards of Conduct;
  • Support volunteers by answering questions, problem solving and correcting errors;
  • Quality Review” all prepared tax returns to ensure accuracy prior to printing and submission to IRS;
  • Complete all required trainings throughout the tax season;
  • Must ensure tax returns are 100% accurate without errors by verifying tax documents and all supporting documentation;
  • Review documents uploaded in “GetYourRefund” and verify eligibility for tax preparation; Complete interviews, prepare tax returns and review tax returns with taxpayers who use “GetYourRefund”;
  • Assist with intake process; Ensure the intake and interview process is complete prior to collecting tax customer information;
  • Complete quality review with taxpayers during e-file appointment; Direct taxpayers on how to track refund status;
  • Maintain demographics for reporting purposes of all taxpayers eligible and receiving benefits through social services;
  • Assist the Program Coordinator with supervising the clinic in the absence of the Program Coordinator and help to keep the tax clinic operating smoothly, quickly, and efficiently;
  • Help to maintain a healthy and safe environment by sanitizing work stations regularly.

 

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must ensure all rules of VITA program are followed
  • Possess a working knowledge of ADVANCED tax preparation
  • Be able to multi-task, and prepare tax returns quickly and accurately
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational and customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with taxpayers and volunteers

 

TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Tax Law and Preparation knowledge; Experience in tax preparation, accounting, human services or a similar field increasing asset development and financial education
  • Knowledge and proficiency with using the Internet and ability to utilize IRS online tax preparation system.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have reliable transportation that ensures arriving to work at the designated time for tax clinic operations.
  • Must be able to complete “GetYourRefund” system training within one week at your own pace.
  • Must complete IRS-required training and pass four (4) IRS tests within one week of contract date. The online training is available beginning December 2024.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Physical activity of this position – stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting; use of fingers for – picking, pinching and typing; grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motion of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Physical requirements of this position – sedentary work; exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Visual acuity requirements – close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual acuity to operate motor vehicle and/or heavy equipment; must be able to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
  • Conditions subject to in this position – worker is subject to noise; there is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise levels.
  • Adhere to TAP PPE and safety protocols– TAP is mandated vaccine employer and/or approved exemption required.
