DEFINITION AND PURPOSE:
The Intake Specialist works with program participants to address barriers to training and employment so that participants can enter and complete intensive training programs to help them move into middle income jobs. Participant services include outreach and engagement, career planning, detailed assessment, barrier alleviation, preparation for training and employment, group and individualized career coaching and support, workplace mentoring, monitoring, and overall case management.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Supervised by: Assistant Director of Rural Programs
Supervises: Interns
Coordinates with: Other TAP staff, Mountain Gateway Community College staff, WDB and One-Stop staff, other TAP community partners
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides information about the program to and verifies eligibility of potential participants
- Works with staff in other TAP programs, Mountain Gateway Community College staff, and WDB case managers to engage potential program participants
- Attends community events and job fairs to engage interested participants
- Completes intake process with eligible participants, including:
- Facilitating and utilizing the Career Scope assessment to help participant develop an Individual Career Plan (ICP)
- Explaining TAP and CareerForge participant handbooks, with heavy emphasis on the Shared Expectations Agreement (SEA)
- Assisting participants in completing paperwork and gathering required documentation
- Assessing potential barriers to program success, and developing a plan with participant to address them
- Assists Career Mentor in presenting Orientation to Professional Employment (soft skills/job readiness training) that helps staff better understand participant’s capabilities and barriers
- Refers participants to other TAP programs or community resources as applicable
- Ensures that program data is entered into the databases accurately and on a timely basis
- Provides hands-on case management services when necessary for participants
- Provides personal, educational, financial, and employment resources to participants and other staff
- Completes mandatory reports required by funding source and Project Director
- Participates in special events of the agency.
- Performs other duties as assigned and required.
TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Have 2 years related experience or an Associate Degree and significant related experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Free to travel as necessary.
- This position is eligible for remote work upon supervisor’s approval.
- This position requires the individual to be in the field and must have contact with the office staff and supervisor therefore an agency issued cell phone is necessary.
- Reliable transportation and a valid Virginia Operator’s license with a good driving record for insurance purposes.
- TAP participates in the Virginia DMV Driver Alert Program. Employees who operate a TAP vehicle or their personal vehicle to conduct TAP business may be subject to driver record monitoring through the Virginia DMV Driver Alert Program.
- Must pass drug screening. Some positions require positive complete background screening including: criminal, sex offender and child protective services.
- Physical activity of this position – climbing, ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, use of fingers for – picking, pinching and typing; grasping, feeling, hearing, talking, repetitive motion of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Physical requirements of this position – light work; exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
- Visual acuity requirements – close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
- Conditions subject to in this position – worker not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
