Enroll your child in one of our child care programs and prepare them for kindergarten. Early Head Start is for children up to and including 2 years old. TAP Head Start is a preschool program for children 3 and 4 years old.

About TAP Head Start

Head Start and Early Head Start programs include important education and learning skills as well as health services and screenings, teaches good eating habits and manners, supports parents, and promotes physical activity.

Our program offers:

Free preschool, infant, and toddler care
Nutritious meals
Health and dental screenings
Items such as diapers and formula are provided
Care for special needs or English language-learners
Each family is provided with a Whole Family Advocate (WFA) who connects families to school, jobs, transportation, and housing resources. The WFA also provides assistance with resume writing, and items that make it possible for parents to go to work such as books, uniforms, shoes, and more.

Services are available for the children’s families, guiding the parents toward playing a bigger part in their child’s growth, as well as services for pregnant mothers to make sure a child’s health and development start out well.

We also work with partners in Montgomery, Giles, and Pulaski counties for families interested in Early Head Start programs in the New River Valley.

TAP Head Start/Early Head Start is proud to partner with the United Way Roanoke Valley on the new Smart2Start program. This program provides a single point of contact for parents to learn about and enroll their children in early care and education programs throughout the region, including Head Start and Early Head Start.

Head Start and Early Head Start child care and preschool are free for families whose household income meet the eligibility requirements below.

The 2024 poverty guidelines are in effect as of January 17, 2024
The Federal Register notice for the 2023 Poverty Guidelines will be published the week of January 17 through January 17, 2025.

Each family applying will have to provide the following income documents as proof of eligibility:

If employed: Check stub; W-2 Form; Letter on official letterhead from your employer stating the days, hours, and wages per hour that you earn

Proof of other forms of income, such as: TANF letter from DSS; SSI letter from the Department of Social Services

Verification of child’s birth: Birth certificate; Birth letter from a hospital

High-quality care and education for children birth through 5 years old
