The very first client of Responsible Rides has completed the key exchange. Ms. Quandra Bonds of the Roanoke Valley completed the financial and mechanical courses required for this program and is now driving off in her new car.New River Community Action (NRCA) and Total Action Against Poverty (TAP) have launched a new program - Responsible Rides. NRCA and TAP have partnered with Freedom First Credit Union, Freedom First Insurance and Enterprise Auto Sales to offer lower-income families a vehicle purchase program that is both affordable and reliable. The program presents solutions to individuals who need cars to upgrade or hold employment, but face credit or income challenges.Auto prices through Responsible Rides are no hassle and guaranteed to be below NADA and Kelly Blue Book retail values. All autos are fully checked for long-term reliability. Loan interest rates are below market; average monthly payments are approximately $200. Approved customers are asked to participate in financial literacy and auto maintenance classes prior to purchase and customer credit is strengthened through loan repayment.
“Many lower-income families try to buy dependable used vehicles at prices and interest rates they can afford, but run into problems because their financial situations might prevent them from qualifying for reasonable credit lines,” stated Donna Stevens, Director of Responsible Rides. “Families with limited incomes must use their dollars wisely. This program will help a family purchase a reliable car at a price and interest rate suitable to their income.” Program application is open to families with incomes of 200% of the federal poverty guidelines or less. For example, a family of four can have a maximum income of $44,100. Freedom First Credit Union is the financial institution managing the loans, so applicants must work, worship, live or be a student in one of the Freedom First service areas of Roanoke, Botetourt, and Montgomery Counties or Salem, Roanoke and Radford Cities.
In addition to inviting customer applications, Responsible Rides is seeking donated vehicles. NRCA and TAP are non-profit charitable organizations, so all contributions are tax-deductible according to IRS regulations.
